The Bicycle Thief (Ladri di biciclette)

It is a 1949 Italian movie and is a sincere and genuinely touching film in its examination of poverty in post-war Rome. One of the most depressing scenes is near the end when the father is being humiliated in front of his young son. Movies are not always just for entertainment; they are also used to open our eyes to hardships many people have to endure. This dark, simple story is the most crushing portrayal of economic desperation and humiliation I've ever seen.
